"Red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, watch that fellow!" This is how you can tell apart some nonvenomous snakes which are banded red, black, and yellow from the highly venomous coral snake, which has red touching yellow as in this handsome specimen. The coral snake is the only venomous land snake in North America which is not a pit viper.
