I'm such a grammar freak. I have too many pet peeves.
News reporters especially are disappointing. It seems no ones knows the proper use of "fewer" and "less" anymore.
Don't get me started...Argh!

So bear with me, please. English is not my native language.
replyI was never taught and didn't know the distinction between fewer and less until I started coaching kids for the SAT in my 50s and learned it from a prep book. And I'm well read and was an Honors student in college. NOW I know that the Express Lane at the store should say "20 items or Fewer" rather than "less"
replyHad a similar list. Mine included:
-proofread carefully to see if you any words out
-do not use an extensive word when a diminutive one would suffice

You may be interested to know that the Dutch word for squirrel is eekhoorn, pronounced roughly like "acorn." This led to some confusion when I was trying to learn the word from a Dutch fellow student and teach him the English word. The "eek" element may or may not be related to our words "oak" and "acorn".
replySure. Just one picture is not hard enough... You are a master of this! Thank you!

Something new for me... I didn't know its name in English.
