Might be doing one of those secret wall walk moves, I've never mastered those, only ever happened by accident.

Probably more than you care to know, but a wall jump would be impossible in this scenario. A wall jump can happen only when Mario is travelling downward and the right most pixel of his sprite happens to clip inside the edge of another object. Normally the game would eject Mario in the direction opposite the way he is facing (push him out of the object he clipped into, same as if Big Mario crouches beneath a single block then stands up. He's pushed out the other side.) There is a two/three frame window before Mario's sprite is pushed back that he can perform a jump.
The other way Mario can wall jump is if he lands perfectly between two pixels of an object. For a single frame the player can buffer an A-press and Mario will jump off the bottom-most pixel as if it was solid ground. In the above scenario, the bottom of Mario's shoe is below the pipe, thus no wall jumping :-(

Part of it from experience... I've been playing SMB1 since it came out in 1985 (maybe '86, can't remember that far back!). But mostly from watching and listening to people who are much smarter than me discuss the inner workings of the game. Speedrunners, TAS creators, programmers and the like. I can't play video games anymore because of my hands, so the next best (read: humbling) thing is to watch someone race through my favorite game in record time.

Strangely recognizable - for me as I've never followed this character - :):)
