The original was absolutely amazing for the times - I still play it occasionally on an NES emulator

I just started the original one! Never played it before
I half jokingly say that the original game was Dark Souls decades before Dark Souls - it just drops you into a cruel world where everything wants you dead (and will kill you many times before you learn how to deal with them), and a billion secrets for you to discover with very little in the way of allies or clues. I still prefer the sequel (for all of its oddities and flaws) but the original game deserves the highest praise just for how influential it was. On top of being a great game.
It's a secret to everybody.
