Thought it might be an old style newspaper reporter with a fedora, but it kinda looks more like a bonnet. Aside: Remember when men wore something other than baseball caps? It could just be local fashion

Agree re local fashion - and about other hats - also that unlike now that the baseball caps are worn indoors and outside at night in hot weather - in both instances unnecessary. Sadly not because the wearer is trying to make a "fashion statement" given that a) usually the cap is old and grotty b) the rest of the outfit would be suitable for doing garden work or crawling under car rather than sitting in a restaurant etc.

You are no doubt correct. Speaking as a female - I find unnecessary baseball caps as off putting as I used to find comb-overs. It's interesting that these days there are still, most probably, men who are embarrassed about a receding hairline albeit we have had numerous world famous 'bald' men for many years who have embraced the 'smooth' look.
