The image is very pleasing, and I'm glad I took the time to solve it... but this puzzle is just lackluster for me. Everything is executed well enough: nothing spans the entire grid without a little logic first, only a few of the colors around the border are gimmes, the pacing of the puzzle (yes I consider such a thing) was relaxing and fitting of the image. It just wasn't anything special. They're not all going to be home-runs, and I certainly don't expect that. But it was brought to my attention that I tend to only review puzzles I really like or really dislike. This one falls somewhere in between. It was fine, and sometimes that's good enough.

Before anyone brings it up, it would be hypocritical of me not to address a complaint I had about another author recently. I just dragged seans over the coals for repeating a subject very quickly, and some of y'all were none too pleased. This is a great example of a creator repeating themselves while adding value to the experience. The subject is facing a different direction and with a markedly different expression to the original. I'd rather something new, but this is a good example of how puzzles can be thematically linked while still having their own flavor.

(These are the puzzle I complained about: www.nonograms.org/nonograms/i/50033 ; www.nonograms.org/nonograms/i/50089 )

Puzzles don't have to be hard to be good and doing the same subject over and over is perfectly fine
If i did a weekly image of a monkey it would still be a puzzle that anyone could enjoy, since the site is the one that makes the layout

Your comment is confusing. I didn't say anything in my review about difficulty being a criterion for a 'good' puzzle. In fact, I didn't mention the level of difficulty at all! Doing the same subject on repeat may be acceptable for you, but it is not for me. I'm more forgiving of interesting subjects but can't stand seeing generic images over and over especially in quick succession. You don't have to agree, it's just my opinion.

I don't understand your assertion that the website makes the layout. My understanding is that authors upload the completed puzzle and it is either accepted as solvable and published, or dismissed. The website does not alter puzzles (that I know of) nor does it 'generate' puzzles. Everything is user submission with little interference. My complaint was not with the layout of the grid anyway, but with the final image. Two completely different things.

Either way, maybe someone will make a weekly monkey puzzle for you. I'll ignore it, but I'll sleep better knowing you're happy!

I have to chime in here. Puzzles must be solvable to be accepted, but more than that they have to pass an automated duplicate check to make sure one very very similar doesn't appear and a moderator check to ensure they meet the quality standards of the site. About 20% of my pictures are rejected and I can't adjust them to make them acceptable so I have to give up on them. For most of these, I agree with the moderators that they weren't good enough or were too abstract; they don't like abstracts -- too easy to make anything, I guess. But they never alter any picture they accept.

That said, I suspect you are both saying the same thing -- repetition of a theme is fine so long as the puzzle is different and interesting. If someone could come up with any number of monkeys or toucans that all got accepted, it must be because they were sufficiently different to pass moderator checks. I give seans a lot of credit for coming up with a nearly unlimited number of different ways to represent nondescript birds. But I do think he values quantity over quality sometimes.

You don’t have to read what I have to say. But if you do, please don’t be an asshole. There is a human being on the opposite side of your screen, and saying mean things does nothing to better either of our experience. I enjoy writing my reviews, and I know people enjoy reading them. That’s fine if you don’t, but don’t talk about me like you know me. I highly doubt you’ll respond since nobody ever does, but I hope you read this. What you said is rude and serves no purpose other to tear someone else down. THAT is sad. Good day.

It startles me (though it shouldn't) when lots of people say "what lovely colors" while the colors are making my teeth hurt. But I understand this is because I'm weird. Green, say color gurus, is a relaxing color. Paint your bedroom green and you'll sleep better. For me, in general, green is the most irritating color* and color #6 here is about the worst possible shade. So I finished both the green- and keel-puzzles with a bad taste in my mouth.

mindscrub, please ignore me and keep doing what you do so well.

*Kelly green's an exception. I like kelly green, but still don't think it's relaxing.
