A skid-steer is a small front-end loader without a traditional steering system. Instead, the wheels on each side can be driven in opposite directions to pivot in place, which makes it an more maneuverable in tight spaces. Sometimes, the scoop can be swapped out for another tool; I've seen attachments for laying down pavement and for street-sweeping.
