If you made it so if you got one square wrong, you don’t have to press the ‘check the crossword’ button to see if you got it right.

I think "Nobody" meant if you didn't get any squares wrong, the system automatically lets you know you got it right. I suppose newbies aren't aware of that. The "check the crossword" button is more for if you want to make sure you're on track while doing one of the puzzles. It's also helpful if the system doesn't indicate you've correctly solved the puzzle and you absolutely can't see where you went wrong! (Usually with me, I've missed one square somewhere -- usually in puzzles with lots of single pixels.)
