Beautiful and challenging puzzle, Kuu! What do you mean by "drain?" Assuming you found the word in a thesaurus, I'm trying to think of a synonym for drain that is a name for a fruit. Plum? I also love your choice of colors in this piece. Your puzzles just keep improving. Thank you for sharing them with us!
replyI also very much enjoyed the way you set the puzzle up so I could use logic to solve it rather than just math!
replyMaybe the artist was thinking of durain, which is that huge spiky fruit that is famous for smelling bad. I think some varieties of this fruit are reddish, but I don't think they are ever purple or pink. Still, it's a very pretty puzzle.
replyThank you, Judith. On the other hand, I have been sending thank you notes to the artists (most of whom are Russian--if they don't indicate it in the profile, I check their comments in the parentheses). I try to say something specific about their work. When I translate it into Russian and then translate it back into English, I get some very strange results.
replySometimes words have multiple meanings, which are understood depending on context. (I assume that in the original language, drain and plumb are either homonyms, or the same word.) Language dictionaries usually tell you which would be the correct translation for that word (in this case, the choice would be under Fruit, and not under Plumbing), but if using google translate, these distinctions are lost. I hope this helps :)
As an example: my own username, wentelteefje, actually means Tumbly Dogs, which is what the Dutch call French Toast. If I made a puzzle with the incorrect meaning, it would be puzzling indeed! (apologies for this awful pun!)
Or maybe it's what Sheryl said, and a Thesaurus was used.

Oops! I meant drain and plum! (looks like a plum)
replyThe first four letters of Drain in Russian and Plum are the same..maybe thats it!
replyplum vs drain
plum vs plumbing
sleeva vs sleev (Russian)
translation glitch lol

I love this puzzle - It’s beautiful, lightly challenging, and with an extra unexpected puzzle at the end about why it is called “drain”!!!
Personally, I like the theory that the word “drain” and “plumb” are synonyms, and “plumb” and “plum” are homonyms
