Baba Yaga is an important figure in Russian culture, apparently an ancient goddess who ruled in Eurasia before Russia was born. She is now remembered in folklore as a witch who usually flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle (although brooms are creeping in thanks to Western influence), and lives in deep forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs. She may be a villain who eats heroes or may provide magical assistance to heroes-in-need.
