My MIL put turnips in her mashed potatoes. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren think this is terrible, so SIL (now in charge of Thanksgiving) makes with and without. I myself can't tell the difference, so I always take the with-turnip. I don't understand the fuss with the kids (now in their 50s) and the little ones (now all finished with college).
