Let’s see if I can explain without giving it away, because Spoiler won’t work on my iPad. Imagine yourself in the scene described by the title. Which way is west? Which way would shadows be cast in that situation?

Better you should give it away. If you're suggesting that the tree is above the line and the shadow is below it, then the shadow is on the wrong side relative to the sun. I wondered whether the jagged horizontal line is a low-resolution rendering of the curvature of the earth, but that would put the tree on the horizon, floating on the ocean. Or aybe it's a windmill, with its base refracted at the surface.

Let me begin by saying, I am absolutely no artist. TNG and her love for this site brought me here, and I wanted to do something to surprise her.
I did intend that there to be a shadow, but in my haste I simply did not notice that the tree is off-kilter.
