This was the first time I tried to complete a 2.5 difficulty puzzle without Xs. So happy now to succeed! Thank you for the inspiring question.
Quick question to fellow no-X-ers: do you leave auto-fill turned on? That automatically fills rows with Xs when all black spots are completed. (I do.)

tonogen, Yes I do - and I just love that feeling when they all X themselves out! And I don't rate the difficulty of puzzles I solve without Xs.

TNG & I just had the same conversation. Yes both of us do “no X’s” with auto fill turned on so we can get that odd satisfaction of watching the X’s zip across the row.
Try disabling auto fill on a small simple puzzle. Not easy! For an even harder challenge, solve the negative first by ONLY filling in X’s! Once you think you have it correct then fill in the black squares to solve & confirm.
