I have to extend your comment to "other than the US, NZ and Australia" - because for us football (or rugby) is the game with the pointy oval ball.

Well, in Latinoamérica it was ever football, because it's a ball which it's move by a foot.
Here, in Uruguay, now it's "futbol" that sounds the same (in Spanish),

It isn't 'Soccer World Cup', it is FIFA World Cup. Notice that there is no S in FIFA. :-) Why? Because the US is weird. Who over there decided to name a game that mostly is played by hands 'Football'? Knowing that in other parts of the world there already is such a game where the name is more appropriate? Other proof that the US is weird: calling a room where in 90% of the time is no bath, a 'bathroom'. :-)
