I don t know how it is the rest of South America, but in Brazil, calling someone a tapir is a great offense, meaning the person is stupid. However, the poor bad looking animal is considered a very intelligent beast.

No, no, I asked it by simple curiosity. Btw, in Brazil a cow is big offense. And a piranha is even worse!

Ah! I don't either know how is it in the rest. But here, in Uruguay, is not offensive. We never use tapir (oso hormiguero, in Spanish) to refer to a person.
