I learned that originally Blondie was a flapper and Dagwood was the scion of a wealthy family. (I don't remember whether he was chasing her or she was chasing him, and if the latter whether she had a heart of gold or was a gold-digger.) But the Great Depression came and his family lost their money, which is why I grew up thinking the Bumsteads were just your average middle class family.
