My mother used to make this when I were a lad - & in the very same pie dish as shown above!
She took 1lb of shin of beef & an onion & braised them over a candle for 3 weeks. Then she'd add 1lb of King Edwards - boil for 20 minutes - transfer to aforementioned dish & top with suet pastry. It then went into the oven until golden brown.
Ta da ... meat & potato pie. She served it with cabbage & HP sauce - pure ecstasy!
