Yes, impressive indeed - and part of my family history!
Sorry - but I'm going to bore you now:
My maternal grandmother was born in Heptonstall, a village on the top of a Pennine hill. The cottages were built for hand loom weaving. The families lived downstairs with the weaving taking place upstairs.
The first picture shows the road through the village. Generations of my family were hand loom weavers.
The second picture shows Gibson Mill which was built in 1800 on the river in the valley below Heptonstall The dam was built to give a head of water for the waterwheel. Many of the hand weavers found it more profitable to work there.
The final picture is of a smaller mill in nearby Luddenden Foot which looks remarkably similar to NapA's image.
When my mother left school she worked as a weaver in a steam driven mill in Luddenden Foot.
I decided against weaving!
