The first puzzle of this subject was very nice. Well made, a reasonable level of challenge without being tedious. The picture was large and clean, and there was a sense of motion that elevated the final product above more average fare. I didn't review that one because I was a little late to the game and most people who were going to solve it already had. So please take everything I said above as a belated review and kudos to seans to for raising his game.

This puzzle shares all the same praise with one caveat: why was it necessary? Authors are going to revisit subjects from time to time. There's only so many original ideas. No hate for a creator tackling a familiar theme. But when the work is repeated so soon after and with so little difference between puzzles, it feels like a cop-out. At best it's laziness on the part of the creator. At worst, it's a deliberate waste of everyone else's time. seans should have published the puzzle he liked best and saved the other for a later date.

Have you never heard of theme and variations? I love all the series that seans does -- the interest is in how he varies a subject.

Would you be as quick to defend a director who released a good film… then six months later released another film with the same actors, plot, script and costumes and just shot a few scenes from different angles? That’s literally all seans is doing here is puking out almost the exact same puzzle. It’s not a variation on a theme, it’s just the same damn thing. Had he made two of the subject: cool. Maybe a swimming version: awesome. Even a mirror image would be enough of a change to justify another puzzle. This example isn’t a variant. It’s just a tired rehash and he deserves to be call out on it.

These are great of examples on variety within a theme. Each puzzle stands on it's own and are different enough to justify their own existences.

Thanks for adding something of value to the discussion. I'm sure your contribution will be thoroughly considered and a response of equal merit will come shortly. While you wait, there are more grammatical errors on this page you could point out if that's your thing.

I could spend days working my Grammar Police badge, true. It was just the moment; that, and it stood out because your writing is always so elegant.

Three things: I appreciate the use of the word 'police' over the less appealing alternative... we all know the word that normally goes there. Secondly, I didn't expect a response to my smart-ass comment and certainly not one that took the high road instead of calling me out for being a defensive tool. Finally, anyone who can properly use a semicolon is OK in my book. +3 internets for you good sir.

All sudoku's look the same, but millions of people solve them every day. There's a filter for rating, feel free to use it if you want. Is seans lazy then? No way! Thank you seans for giving me my daily bread.

The difference of course is that sudoku is not a visual medium. The ‘reward’ for a completing a nonogram is the image. An author posting similar images just days apart is wildly underwhelming. Nice name by the way.

Well said ultracritical. Seans brings us a plethora of puzzles. I am GRATEFUL for that brain stimulation. But, I do get frustrated when such similar puzzles are presented in such a close time span.

People who have been here for a little while are well-aware of the fact that seans often creates a series of nonograms with subtle differences. Many of them, myself included, are grateful that s/he is so prolific, giving us the opportunity to lose ourselves for a few minutes in meditative logic. Of course, some people may only be here for the end result, rather than the process. If that describes you, I hereby give you permission to not spend time completing puzzles submitted by artists who are known for playing with variations of a theme. Problem solved.

Thanks for the permission, Jefff. I was waiting for someone to give me the OK to stop doing seans' puzzles. Until this moment, it has been a living hell of slogging through repeated images. So many vases... so... many... penguins.

In all seriousness, I enjoy solving seans' puzzles. Some of them are stinkers, but considering his astounding output, some would have to be. I consider myself among those who prioritize the process of solving the puzzle over the final image. I'd much rather a well-made puzzle that is kind of ugly than a pretty one that doesn't require any thinking. But in this case, even a solid puzzle doesn't justify a near identical solution. I'm plenty familiar with seans' 'variation' on themes. This one just did not have the requisite variety. I think 'subtle' is an overstatement here.

The thing is, this is not the first or second or even third time you have mentioned seans producing similar puzzles, and (ironically) it's getting old. So if you are aware of this possibility and don't like it, then don't solve his puzzles. Alternatively, if you do choose to solve them, don't complain about this known aspect of his work.

If that aspect of his work is known--which I agree, it is--then my criticism remains valid. As I said above, I enjoy seans' puzzles and his many contributions to this site. I choose not to comment on most of them because I have little to say. The ones I do remark on are often the most egregious of the same-stuff-different-day variety. And even those I don't 'complain' about. I provide commentary on my experience with the puzzle. With few exceptions, I always find something positive to say about puzzles I critique, this one included. You are welcome to disagree with my assessment, and you're more than welcome to debate the merits of repetition within a theme. I enjoy a well-reasoned, civil argument as much as I enjoy a good nonogram.

But if your only contribution to the discussion is to suggest I don't do an artist's puzzles... well, I give you my permission to not read my posts. Problem solved?
