Interestingly enough, soccer was the original name for football throughout the world. Somebody eventually decided to change it to football, but by that time football was already being used in the US colleges for the game that grew into what is now known as football. Any country that has it's own game of football (US, Australia and I think New Zealand) refers to this game as soccer.

As soccer is short for "association football", it obviously doesn't predate the term football. "Soccer" and "football" were used interchangeably in the UK for most of the 20th century until "soccer" fell out of favor. "Soccer" has been dominant in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, but this is changing in Australia and New Zealand. In most of the rest of the world there has never been any other term than variations of "football" or direct translations (calques) of it.
