Nice - it sneaks up on you very well.

It sure does. Of the many things I thought it was, this wasn't one of them.

Yeah, I thought it might be some kind of clay pot or jar, or maybe the control piece that spins on those old phones.

Starting at the end (which is much better than "first things first" in my opinion), I think "DIAL" is what you are suggesting?
Your first clue might have been better with the prefix "Old" - as in "(old) clay pot or jar.
Why better you ask? Well - because in England we refer to people of a certain age as "Old Crocs" see:

Now it all fits Onono!!!
We have "DIAL" (an old) "CROC"

A crock, or a dial, those are the words I was looking for.

Oh my goodness. Are you sure JR would have caught your pun? I am so sorry this great play on words went right over my head.

I'm not criticising; that was obscure and I didn't expect you or anyone else to pick up on it. JR does have a special talent though (and I hope we see him here again some time soon).

I got it immediately. Wonderful. Of course, when I read your first comment I thought, "Really? You don't know what that control piece is called?" (On the other hand, at my age, losing the proper name for it is just life. And then you wake up at two in the morning and you have it.)

I was visiting a friend, and we were talking about that memory problem, and he told me about a book that he had read, with lots of ideas for boosting your memory -- one of them was to associate a word, or image, with a person who you meet. The example that he gave was our friend Ralph, who reminds us of a sheep dog -- he uses "ruff", the sound of a bark, to remember his name.
I asked him who wrote the book, and he said he couldn't remember the name ... but he had an image, a blossom ... oh yeah, with thorns. "A rose?" I asked -- "yeah, a rose, that's it ... hey Rose, what's the name of that guy who wrote the memory book?"

I'm back (not really) - will message you & thank you re: the special talent comment!
replyEven when finished, I had to look hard to see what it was. Good picture.
replyGreat detail. It wasn't until I saw the title that I recognized the subject. Very clever!
replyI was determined to make some of the empty space part of the object, so even with the title I had problems seeing it. And then suddenly it seemed obvious.
