Delightful! Fun to solve, and what a beautiful face!
Is there a way to solve this without hints? I'm stumped

same... I could only partially fill in columns 40-44 which is not enough information to move on with the puzzle without some crazy extrapolations that are beyond me.
replyEvery puzzle on the site can be solved by logic alone. If you can't do it then you've missed some information or haven't learned an advanced logic yet. The hints merely show another logical step, so when you resort to using one, try and figure out what logic would give that addition.
replyLikewise could not solve without hints. Am I missing something?
replyIt is difficult but not impossible. The columns 1 and 2 for example can be solved by try and error: e.g. try to mark the three first lines of the first column, and see that it conflicts with the third column. mark the first square of the first column as empty and do it again.
replyOnce columns 7-10 (counting from the right) have been filled in as much as possible, reasoning about where to put the X's gets one on their way to solving the puzzle (e.g., a square must be an X or the run of blacks would be too long or X's can be put on either side of a run of blacks).
