I'm sure it is possible to do by logic alone, but I was completely stuck until I assumed it was symmetrical. Then, As you say, it became easy.

I won't let myself use symmetry to figure something out -- even if I know where something goes, I make myself figure out why. I found that this puzzle fell logically into place if you did things in the right order.

(I should qualify what I just said, having just done a whole lot to solve a big puzzle by whatever means I could. If I'm really stuck I may just guess something so I can get it done!)
