Cloche is french for bell - this is a bell shaped cover, used when serving food.

My wife and I once had pheasant under glass--largely just to be able to say we had. But it was a good restaurant, and the pheasant was good. (This is the restaurant where we decided we wanted a Black Forest cake for our wedding cake. Didn't turn out that way.)
