What is marmite, exactly? A long while back one of my grandsons just liked saying the word and thought it would be a great idea to get some. Alas, his gram didn't got the extra mile to procure any for him.

A thick brown gunge made from yeast - a bit like sprouts - you either love it or hate it.

It is a yeast extract, deep brown and in texture halfway between peanut butter and taffy, which tastes a lot like beef bouillon. Many people of British extraction like it spread on toast. The only thing I ever used it for was to make vegetarian stock for soups, a spoonful to many cups of boiling water.
