A symbol of the game of Myst (and the series as a whole), the falling man seems to represent a person falling through the Star Fissure, a pathway between Ages much less well-understood than the Linking Books usually used for travel.
The Myst universe is a wonderfully weird fantasy universe; and I think it's a shame that more computer games don't have such weird settings. There's a "Mystcraft" mod for Minecraft which, while a little bit janky, is a really cool exploration of the concept.

I LOVED that game. I didn't recall the falling man, so I did a bit of research just now, and I guess it was the very original version in 1993 that I played on my mother's Mac. It wasn't available then on PC, and when the PC version came out, it didn't run as well. But every time I visited my mother, I gravitated to it. That kind of game where you explore and uncover things in a wonder-full environment, especially with a peaceful soundtrack, is what I really love -- not the action packed games. And it was beautiful, even with the graphic capabilities of the time. Thanks for the memories!

Sorry, I did a bit of editing, and I guess in the process unclicked the spoiler... or something... I give up today!

I don't think that the falling man was an image in the game anywhere; it was on the game box itself (and kind of subtly, too).
Poking around online, it sounds like there's some controversy about *who* it is. People tend to assume that it's The Stranger (i.e., the player character), but it seems like it's officially Atrus (who also falls through the Star Fissure before the events of Myst, I think?). This makes sense, because the profile looks a lot like a man, and I think they've tried to avoid specifying the gender of The Stranger.

Even without the Myst reference, the picture was immediately recognizable as a falling man.
