I didn't understand the significance of this date, so I 'googled' it and there are a number of historical events which occurred on this date. Which is it? Or is it simply the artist's birthday?

Because of the time difference, WW2 ended on the 9th of May in Russia (instead of the 8th of May in Europe) and the author of the puzzle is from Russia, so Han_nah suggestion is very plausible.
