NES was rectangular controllers. I think this is more like the Super NES.

By the time NES took off internationally, the SNES was right around the corner - thus a lot of people who were debating on the NES ended up jumping straight to SNES. Plus, the SNES went on longer in people's homes, and thus in people's minds. So, for a lot of people, the look of the SNES became "original Nintendo," even though it was 3-4 gens past the actual original (the actual original being red and white not really selling internationally).
It seems like every other newly launched system has a similar leap-frog situation. Especially when you look at how long they made new games compatible with the previous system - lest they piss off consumers who just bought it 2 years ago. So, true or not, it feels like the PS3 was sort of skipped, and a lot of people went straight from PS2 to PS4. And I knew very few people who ever got around to buying an N64, while it felt like the Gamecube held on for ages.

Another bit of trivia that's relevant - because joysticks and paddles were separate controllers with Atari systems, the phrase joystick did endure past the point where "controller" started taking over. Probably more so because the next gen of controllers didn't merge the joystick and paddle, it instead merged the joystick with button pads - leaving the paddle to the memories of us original Pong players. So there were people who got in the habit of referring to anything as a joystick as long as it had at least one joystick attached to it. I wouldn't be the tiniest bit surprised if that carried into how they were referred to internationally.
It's similar to how, depending on what part of the US you live in, you might have grown up calling 7-Up or Sprite colas, even though caramel coloring is one of the main identifiers of a cola.

at first I thought it was hard but it was easy
replyI once commented how I like these under a minute challenges and got a hilarious reply: "That's what my wife says." Given the title, here it would be even more funny.
