I used all three hints (which weren't particularly helpful) plus some judicial guesses checked with the Check the Crossword button (kind of like targeted hints)... Lovely result when I finally got it!

Definitely better as it gets smaller. I saw nothing at all until I reduced it. (But then I was expecting a *transverse* flute.)

Look again; it is a transverse flute (a left-handed one, though; the flute extends to the player's left). You're behind and to the left of the flutist.

Very tough -- but each time I was about to get a hint, I found another step I could do... and when I had just a few pixels left, I sat back and thought "wow!" That's an amazing depiction with just a few black squares!
