Because you don't know it's symmetrical. These can all be solved without the assumption of symmetry. Guess and check if you want, but it's possible to do using logic.

I should append this to say that for some puzzles, you can logically derive that they are symmetrical. At that point, it's no longer a guess and I would consider it a valid way to solve it. But I'm a bit anal retentive, so "valid solving technique" might mean something different to me.

I found this much more rewarding to solve using logic rather than relying on the obvious symmetry. I guess I'm "anal retentive" as well!
