Baba Yaga is an important figure in Russian culture, apparently an ancient goddess who ruled in Eurasia before Russia was born. She is now remembered in folklore as a witch who usually flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle (or broom), and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs. She may be a villain who eats heroes or may provide magical assistance to heroes-in-need.
