Huh?! Since when is that term considered a mark of respect or status independent of whether or not it's an accurate descriptor?
Even in the case of people calling someone who is not their grandmother granny, it's meant to convey they have the relationship of a grandparent/grandchild, even if it's neither legal or by blood.

In lots and lots of cultures! Eg in South Africa if you're speaking to a woman old enough to be this relative, you'd call her Mamakulu.
