Did you know? Because I did not. Indian was the common term for native peoples for a long time. It stems back to Christopher Columbus. He called the people gente en Dios or people of God, which morphed over time to Indios and then Indian.
How quickly times change. Supposedly in 2021 the preferred is now American Indian.

oops, sorry about forgetting to hit the spoiler.
replyFrom what i recall, they were called indians because Columbus thought he had reached India, his ultimate goal.

I've read that as it was the East Indies. I have also read that people were simply called indigenous and that got bastardized to Indian. Seems historians don't agree on many things.

I've never heard of this, and I'm sceptical because Europeans of the time didn't consider non-Europeans people of God, they considered them resources to be exploited; or inconveniences to be removed; but I'm not an expert, so I searched and found this, https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/490511/indian-comes-from-italian-spanish-gente-in-dios-god-like-people-false-ety . There doesn't seem to be any evidence for the "people of God" theory.
replyThought it would be a porcupine or hedgehog.
