1. BOOK: This is an illustration of a character from the book (and movie) *The Dead Mountaineer's Inn* by Russian science fiction authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. When an avalanche strands a number of strange characters at a mountain inn, a bizarre locked-room murder occurs. Glebsky, a police office on vacation, tries to solve the murder in a rational manner. The authors challenge the assumption of the detective genre: can this evil act be approached rationally? (Perhaps an existential questions as the Strugatsky brothers barely survived a number of horrors during WWII including Hitler's siege of Leningrad).

As for the image in the crossword: The review (see first spoiler) says:
questions of identity are fundamental to the story. This is most obvious in the case of the kid Brun, a moody youth of indeterminate sex -- "Was it a boy ? Or, damn it, a girl ?" (This confusion is played to fine comic effect, especially in Glebsky's interactions with the youth, as he tries to fix a sex to Brun.)
