We see them regularly when we go for walks. So elegant. So stately.

So greedy - one nearly emptied our pond of fish last week

Ha! So if we want to write an equation called: rate at which heron empties John's pond of fish, it's a function of the greediness and busy-ness of the bird--not the size of the pond and the number of fish available? Interesting. That's just the approach some people take in judging the unemployed. It's somehow their fault if there aren't any fish in John's pond (okay, stretched that metaphor too far!!)

I took action & bought floating heron guards - you clip them together with cable ties so that they form a foot wide ring right round the pond edge. Theory is that when a heron tries to step into the water the guards sink & confuse the bird.
I was unsure if they would work - but 3 years later I can report the current score:
Lovely plump fish 50 ::: Heron 0
They work!

Happy to read of John's successful attempts to save his fish -- hopefully the herons have found less-loved fish to eat. Happy to have an excuse to look up blithering vs. blathering -- although they're pretty much synonymous, there are some interesting minor differences, and it appears that blithering is only "preferred" in the term blithering idiot. And as usual, enjoyed the comments almost as much as the puzzle! Thanks for being an interesting community of solvers. Now I really need to get back to work. :)
