Pepa - there were patterns long before there were numeric keypads. In this case the numeric keypad is for entering the victim's number - a bit like the old saying "you'll only get shot if the bulley has your number on it!"

Most grenades made early killed not by explosion but by shrapnel. The Pattern creates weakness in the structure so when the grenade goes off it sends multiple of those sections in every direction.
