Wow. I'm shocked by your comment. Obviously, this is a picture of a young boy. It's cute ... looks like he's doing that "raising the ceiling" dance. Why do you think it's racist? Do you dare say? Please don't bring your hate and bigotry this website. This is a place for fun and amusement not your ugly racist rhetoric. If you don't like "black" puzzles then go over to the colorful nonograms where you might find some "flesh colored" little boys. Shameful.

Those who are bothered by any representation of a non-white person are the real racists. Black skin color is not a disfiguring thing that is not to be portrayed out of tact. The puzzle shows a lovely boy and I like them both.

Have you ever seen a black person? Are you aware that they don't have giant white lips? This is an image taken from minstrelsy, not an image of an actual black person. If you can't figure that out you're either wilfully ignorant or very, very dumb.

The author himself says it's a black boy from a story, so not from minstrelsy. Maybe you didn't read his comment. Just below is Sheryl's comment, which also explains a lot. And how could the lips have been represented differently in a b/w image? Thanks for your answer anyway, I learned something about minstrelsy on this occasion, which was completely new to me as a German. You draw conclusions about my character very, very quickly, I won't do the same to you. But I would like to know where you are from and how old you are.

Race-based caricatures are not cool.
reply
Author Vigil (28 February 2018, 5:26) complain
It not "a racial caricature". This is Maksimka from sea stories by Stanyukovich (the Russian writer of the 19th century).
And he dances. Probably, I did not manage to tell how he smiles.

In Ben Hellman's book on the history of Russian literature, he says that Stanuikovich was particularly interested in the 1860's when the Russian emperor liberated the peasants and ended corporal punishment in the army and navy. In Maxima, written in 1896, a Russian ship rescues a shipwrecked African boy who had been an American slave. Now that Maxima is treated as a person for the first time, he decides to become Russian and joins the Orthodox church. The book is written for children to celebrate freedom, equality, and human dignity as represented by Maxima's new life. There are many histories and many stereotypes represented on this site. Good idea to check your facts. Love you all, of course! <3

Well I've done a fair amount of googling, and still have no clue what book this is supposed to be referring to. Anyone want to share a link?

Hi Vigil. I very much appreciate that you took the time to enter the discussion and offer some clarification. Not only does it provide needed context but it helps us know that you are really present to the comments being made. And by the way, the image is quite striking.

I take it that if the boy had been white the pic wouldn't have been racist. Why??
reply
Sheryl_Hill (28 February 2018, 19:53) complain
It wasn't the color of the picture, Corpore. You only have two choices with black and white. The picture was confused with another picture with a different history.

I thought it was a zombie! I think blackface images have a rather different connotation in the West than they do in Russia! Thanks for the explanation Sheryl, gives quite a different angle to it!
