There was a speaker that fit against your ear, and you could move it an inch or more in any direction and still be able to hear the sound. And a microphone that went right in front of your mouth, so that too could move about and the person on the other end would still be able to hear you. And the thing was indestructible, and even if you did find a way to break it you didn't have to buy a new one because the phone company would replace it. And the very best thing about it was that if you left the house you could have some peace, because no one would be able to call you. Ahhhh...

I have to remind myself that these puzzles are made by people from all over the world and phones like these are probably still in use in many places. Nice to be reminded.
replySpoiler Warning - @Palouday: You created a finite series of time pulses, via putting your finger in a numbered hole and spinning the dial as far as it would go clockwise. Then you let go, the dial returns to its original position, and you do that as many times as necessary to tell the system what number you're calling. It was a mechanical system, much like how the original telegraph machines worked.

Remember how it hurt to dial if you had a sore cuticle on your finger? I would sometimes use a pencil instead of my finger

I actually had to use one of these in self defense. So, I can attest that it hurt like hell to get hit upside the head with.
